What Does Baited Hook Do?

Baited Hook Effect

To activate Baited Hook, pay 1 Energy and 1 Order Power, then exhaust the Gear.

When the ability resolves, kill a friendly unit and look at the top five cards of your Main Deck. You may choose a unit from those cards whose Might is no greater than the Might of the killed unit plus one.

The chosen unit is banished and then played without paying its normal cost. Afterward, the remaining cards are recycled.

Understanding the Might Requirement

The replacement unit’s Might is subject to a maximum rather than an exact value.

For example, if the friendly unit killed by Baited Hook has 4 Might, you may choose a replacement unit with up to 5 Might.

The replacement does not have to have exactly 5 Might. A unit with a lower eligible Might value can also qualify.

Baited Hook Only Checks the Top Five Cards

Baited Hook looks only at the top five cards of your Main Deck when the ability resolves.

It does not search your entire Main Deck for a replacement. Because of this limitation, finding an eligible unit is not guaranteed.

If none of the top five cards contains an eligible unit, there is no replacement to choose.

Baited Hook Rules and Errata

October 2025 Card Erratum

Riot Games issued an official Origins card erratum that changed the wording of Baited Hook’s ability.

The corrected effect requires the selected replacement unit to be banished before it is played. Older copies of the card may show wording that does not include this banish step.

For current gameplay, use the corrected effect rather than relying on the older printed wording.

Play Cost vs. Ability Cost

Baited Hook has two separate costs that should not be confused.

The Gear costs 3 Energy to play.

After Baited Hook is in play, activating its ability requires 1 Energy, 1 Order Power, and exhausting Baited Hook.

The 3-Energy play cost is not part of the ability’s activation cost.

When Is the Friendly Unit Killed?

Killing the friendly unit is part of the ability’s resolution.

It is not an additional Energy or Order Power payment.

Once the ability resolves, the friendly unit is killed before you determine which eligible unit, if any, can be selected from the top five cards.

Baited Hook for Riftbound Players

Gameplay Function

Baited Hook provides a way to exchange a friendly unit for a potential replacement from the top five cards of your Main Deck.

The replacement unit must satisfy the Might restriction based on the friendly unit that was killed. If an eligible unit is selected, it is banished and played without paying its normal cost.

The effect is therefore dependent on both the Might of the unit being killed and the cards found among the top five cards of the Main Deck.

Important Gameplay Limitations

Baited Hook does not guarantee that a replacement unit will be found.

The ability:

  • Looks at only five cards.
  • Requires an eligible unit based on the killed unit’s Might.
  • Requires 1 Energy and 1 Order Power to activate.
  • Requires Baited Hook to be exhausted.
  • Requires a friendly unit to be killed when the ability resolves.
  • Plays the selected replacement without its normal cost only after the required banish step.

These limitations are important when evaluating how the card works in an actual Riftbound game.
